Effect of X-Irradiation on the Pituitary-Adrenal Axis of the Rat

Whole-body x irradiation (1000 r) caused rapid increase in pituitary ACTH activity, reaching a minimum approximately 0.5 hour after exposure. Concomitantly, there was depletion of adrenal ascorbic acid, which reached a minimum approximately 1 hour after exposure. Pituitary ACTH activity and adrenal ascorbic acid returned to normal levels by 24 hours after irradiation. Sham irradiation also caused decreases in pituitary ACTH activity and adrenal ascorbic acid, but the alterations were greater in irradiated animals. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that irradiation acting as a stressor caused release of ACTH from the pituitary. (auth)
