EFFECTS OF X IRRADIATION ON ADRENAL FUNCTION IN RATS (in Japanese)

Journal Article · · J. Physiol. Soc. Japan
OSTI ID:4057396

Most previous reports on the early effects of x irradiation on the weight, ascorbic acid, and cholesterol cortent of the adrenals show that the acute radiation syndrome has much in common with the response to nonspecific stresses resulting in adrenal stimulntion. The presert findings, on the contrary, indicate that the corticosteroid content of the blood, collected by direct cannu1ntion of the adrenal vein of the rat, decreases about 30 min after whole-body or local (adrenal-only-exposed) x irradiation at doses of 800 to 2000 r. After local irradiation, the adrenal of the unirradiated side maintains the same corticosteroid secretion as that of intact normal and sham-operated rat in spite of a drastic decrease in the irradiated side. Administration of ACTH to the irradiated rats did not raise the corticosterone secretion to the normal level. In rats stressed by immobilization, steroid secretion is also decreased by whole-body or local x irradiation, even in each case of exposure to adrenal only, exposure to head only, and exposure to the whole body with shielding adrenal region. It is suggested that x radiation has a dual action: systemic suppression of the adrenals, presumably via the hypothalamus-pituitary axis; and local inactivation of adrenal function itself. (BBB)
