INDUCTION BY X RAYS OF DNA DESTRUCTION IN ESCHERICHIA FREUNDII. I. EFFECT OF THE MEDIUM COMPOSITION ON IRRADIATION AND INCUBATION (in French)

Journal Article · · Intern. J. Radiation Biol.
OSTI ID:4716124
Destruction of desoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) occurred when Escherichia freundii was irradiated and incubated for two hours at 37 deg C in a medium that did not allow multiplication. The addition of various salts modified the proportion of DNA destroyed. Two types of protective effect were observed. One appeared to be linked to osmotic pressure and the other appeared to be an anti- oxygen effect. Mechanisms involved in the destruction of DNA are discussed. (C.H.)
