An alternative synthesis route to DL-STA1-C/sup 14/! glyceric acid is described which gives an overall yield of 70%. The route involves the formation of a nitrile from glycollaldehyde, sodium STAC/sup 14/! cyanide, and benzoyl chloride; the isolation of the nitrile; and finally the acid hydrolysis of the nitrile.
