NUCLEAR REACTOR

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4715262
A method of testing the presence of a damaged fuel cartridge in a gas cooled nuclear reactor comprises sampling coolant gas, which has passed over the cartridges in the reactor, precipitating for a minimum period of two minutes any ionised particles present in the coolant gas sampled, and measuring the activity of the precipitated particles. The apparatus for testing the presence of a damaged fuel cartridge according to this method comprises a bank of precipitation chambers, means for moving an electrode therethrough, this electrode passing after the precipitation of the particles from the chambers to a bank of monitors, so that each monitor measures only the activity of ionised particles precipitated from a chamber corresponding to the monitor in question and a signal occurring at a monitor can be identified in this manner with a particular precipitation chamber. A pressure vessel encloses the precipitation chambers, electrode and monitors. Preferably the said electrode is constituted of a wire running over pullies and passing successively the banks of precipitation chambers and of monitors. (IIB)
