A method for testing a damaged fuel cartridge in a gascooled nuclear reactor is present. The method consists of sampling coolant gas which has passed over fuel cartridges in the reactor, passing the sample gas over a surface which is under the influence of an electric field so that solid daughter products of fission products are precipitated on this surface, and monitoring this surface to detect beta particles and gamma rays of energies greater than 3 Mev. The principal solid daughter product detected is Rb/sup 88/ derived from Kr/sup 88/. Rb/sup 88/ emits beta particles in the range 2 to 5.2 Mev. (IIB)
