MEASUREMENT AND CONTROL IN THE SUGAR INDUSTRY BY MEANS OF ISOTOPES (in German)

Journal Article · · Zucker (West Germany) Merged with Z. Zuckerind. to form Zuckerindustrie (Berlin)
OSTI ID:4715101
Actual and potential uses of radioisotopes in the beet sugar industry are reviewed. Several fundamental facts concerning radiation and radioisotopes are given, and the application of radioisotopes in sugar beet extraction and sugar refining is discussed. However, discussion is restricted to density determinations using Cs/sup 137/ as the radiation source and an ionization chamber for radiation measurement. The use of the well-known attenuation equation for gamma radiation to measure the density of the sugar solution and its sugar content is explained. The discussion includes the accuracy attainable, statistical variations in reiation to measuring time, and instrument sensitivity and its adjustment to the required measurement range. Since the sugar industry deals with materials, which under high pressure and temperature are viscous, semi- solid, and sticky, no other measuring method offers the advantages obtained by using radioisotopes, which permit measurements to be carried out without contact with the measured material.
