Continuous measurement of the refractory lining of rotary furnace kilns with /sup 60/Co gamma sources and scintillation counting is described in Chapter 1. The height of the layer of material in the rotary kiln is determined by transmission measurements from /sup 60/Co sources (Chap. 2). The amount of dust in the exit gas from a cement kiln is determined automatically by measuring the attenuation of beta partlcles through a layer of dust particles filtered out of the gas stream (Chapter 3). The decarboxylation of calcium carbonate can be automatically determined by radioisotopic transmission measurements, since the density of the calcined material is less than that of the uncalcined material (Chapter 4). Ore densification was determined by measuring transmitted gamma rays from /sup 137/Cs and /sup 60/Co sources (Chapter 5). Automatic control of the structural characteristics of a suspended layer of solid particles is covered in Chapter 6. The control of the production of burned lime by radioisotopic methods of measuring material density is discussed in Chapter 7. Radioisotopic methods used in measuring the flow of solid materials are discussed in Chapter 8. Activation analysis to control the composition of raw materials in cement production is covered in Chapter 9. Radioisotopic counters as systems of automatic control are discussed in Chapter 10. (SJR).
