THE ABSOLUTE INTENSITY OF C$sub 2$ SWAN BANDS (thesis)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4714951

The Swan-band system of the C/sub 2/ molecule was produced in emission in a source of thermal equilibrium. The ratio was measured of the intensity in emission and in absorption of certain features of the O-O Swan band relative to a blackbody or to a tungsten lamp by using photographic plates and photoelectric scanning techniques. The absolute intensity for the feature was obtained therefore, since the absolute intensity of a blackbody or of a tungsten lamp can be obtained from the Planck equation and the experimentally measured emissivity of tungsten. Experimental results are expressed in terms of the absolute f value or oscillator strength. The absolute f value for the O-O Swan band of C/sub 2/ in emission is 0.004 plus or minus 0.0007 for the photoelectric scanning experiments on rotational lines, and 0.006 plus or minus 0.004 for emission measurements of rotational lines on photographic plates. For emission experiments at the O-O head the f value is 0.007 plus or minus 0.004. Absorption experiments at the O-O band head give an f value of 0.005 plus or minus 0.003. The best value for the absolute oscillator strength or f value of the O-O band of C/sub 2/, obtained by averaging the f values from the emission and absorption data, is 0.005 plus or minus 0.003.
