STUDIES OF (p,n) REACTIONS WITH A He$sup 3$ ION CHAMBER AND SOME LEVELS IN Ne$sup 1$$sup 9$

An ionization chamber, containing He/sup 3/ and krypton to a total pressure of 6.6 atm, is developed for the measurement of fast neutron spectra with an energy resolution varying between 40 and 70 kev for neutrons from a few hundred kev to a few Mev. Some details are given of the properties of this instrument and of the methods evolved for the accurate measurements of Q values of (p,n) reactions. For the Na/sup 23/ (p,n) Mg/sup 23/ reaction, Q values of - 4.835 plus or minus 0.003 and -5.288 plus or minus 0.004 Mev are obtained for the ground and first excited state transitions, respectively. In studies of the F/sup 19/(p,n)Ne/sup 19/ reaction, the third, fourth, and fifth excited states of Ne/sup 19/ are identified at excitation energies of 1.506 plus or minus 0.005, 1.538 plus or minus 0.004, and 1.612 plus or minus 0.005 Mev.
