PREPARATION OF CHROMIUM-51 BY SZILARD-CHALMERS REACTION AND SEPARATION BY ION EXCHANGE TECHNIQUES

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4714809

A method for preparation of the radioisotope Cr/sup 51/ in a form suitable for medical applications was worked out. Hexavalent chromium in the form of potassium chromate is used as target material. The trivalent Cr/sup 51/ atoms produced by a Szilard-Chalmers reaction in the chromate crystals are separated from the hexavalent target compound by means of anion exchange. Investigations were made to determine the most favorable irradiation conditions in the Kjeller reactor JEEP. The established method represents a convenient method for routine preparation of Cr/sup 51/ of high specific activity. (auth)
