ENRICHMENT OF CHROMIUM-51 BY SZILARD-CHALMERS PROCESS
Attempts were made to examine the feasibility of using an ion-exchange method to separate the Cr from chromate targets. An anion-exchange resin was selected, rather than cation exchange because elution of Cr from the cation resin is difficult and the efficiency of Cr recovery lower. Successful enrichment of Cr/sup 51/ was achieved with a potassium chromate target, (enrichment factor approximates 3000), and comparison was also made with an ammonium chromate target. Neutron bombardment of potassium chromate and ammonium chromate was carried out in the presence of air. Separation of Cr/sup 51/ from the target material was carried out by Dowex 2 x 8 (50-100 mesh) cycled in chloride form. A 0.9 x 9-cm column was used to treat about 30 mg of irradiated chromate. A study of the reduction of chromate by anion exchanger Dowex 2 at different contact times and at a fixed acidity showed that the reduction is almost completely depressed if the contact time between the exchanger and chromate is less than 1 min (for both potassium chromate and ammonium chromate). At a fixed contact time, reduction of chromate becomes appreciable, though not serious when the acidity exceeded 0.1N HCl. Thus, rapid separation from target material must be carried out to minimize the reduction of chromate by anion-exchange resin, so that the optimum enrichment of Cr/sup 51/ can be effected. By use of potassium chromate as target, an enrichment factor as high as 3000 was obtained under favorable conditions. When ammonium chromate was used as the target material, rather lower enrichment factors were obtained despite the fact that much higher over-all radioactivity recovery was observed. (TCO)
