A neutron activation analysis method was devised for the determination of vanadium in petroleum. The possible interferences of diverse elements were examined theoretically on the basis of nuclear data for thermal neutron action of all naturally occurring elements, and it was anticipated that vanadium in petroleum could be determined without chemical separation. In the experiment, a sample (0.04 to 0.12g) was irradiated in the nuclear reactor JRR-1 of about 4 x 10/sup 10/ neutrons per sq cm per second, and mounted in a 2 inch thick, well- type sodium iodide crystal attached to a 256-channel pulse height analyzer. The induced activity was then measured for 1 minute and the resultant gamma spectrum shown on the monitor (Braun tube) was photographed. After 1 minute-standstill of counting operation, the second counting was made for another 1 minute and the resultant gamma spectrum was photographed. Though the range of vanadium content which couid really be determined was 1 to 90 ppm, it might well be deduced that the range of vanadium content to which this method could be applied was 10/sup -1/ to 10/sup 3/ ppm. The coefficient of variation of single analysis for 10 ppm of vanadium was estimated, from related experimental data, at lower than 3% for 0.5 g of petroleum. (auth)
