IMPROVEMENTS IN METHODS FOR ENRICHING AMMONIA IN DEUTERIUM

A method for deuterium enrichment of ammonia by means of a dual temperature exchange is presented. Liquid ammonia mixed with an alkali metal amide catalyst is contacted in counter-flow with gaseous hydrogen. The contact is made in stages in high and low-temperature reactors into which the ammonia and hydrogen are introduced in the inverse order. Deuterium-enriched ammonia is continuously removed from the high-temperature reactor and condensed while deuterium-impoverished hydrogen is removed from the low-temperature reactor. (C.E.S.)
