METHOD FOR REGENERATING ALKYLAMIDE CATALYZERS WHICH HAD BEEN USED FOR ENRICHMENT OF DEUTERIUM BY ISOTOPIC EXCHANGE BETWEEN AMMONIA AND HYDROGEN

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4746648

Isotopic exchange between ammonia and hydrogen is an excellent method for enriching deuterium with the help of catalyzers in such a way that only the alkali metal, which is part of the amide, is regenerated; the hydrogen atoms of the amide are excluded from the regeneration process. The method comprises the steps of electrolysing the mixture of ammonia and amide that has been enriched in deuterium in a first electrolytic cell with a mercury cathode, of electrolysing in a second electrolytic cell the alkali amalgam resulting from the electrolysis in the first cell, the alkali amalgam being the anode, in the presence of ammonia of a low content of deuterium, and of transforming the alkali dissolving in the ammonia while being electrolysed in the second cell into the amide by contacting it with catalytic means in a separate cell. The method can be performed continually. It is of advantage that the alkali metal should not be handled as a dangerous, isolated and separate member. (Gmelin Institute)
