PARAMETER OF THE MAGNETIC FIELDS USED BY WEAK- AND STRONG FOCUSING NUCLEAR INSTRUMENTS

Expressions are derived for the parameters of focusing magnetic fields, namely the scalar and vector magnetic potentials and the magnetic induction. These expressions are valid throughout the magnet gap and are independent of the strong- or weak-focusing character of the field. The fields considered are of the form B/sub z/ = const x r/sup -n/, where B/sub z/ is the axial component of the magnetic induction in the median plane of the gap, r is the radial distance from the magnet axis in the median plane, and n is the index'' of the field. The expressions obtained can be used in analyses of particle orbits and pole-face shapes. (T.F.H.)
