Abstract

A device was developed to add digital data to pulseheight spectra information read out from Hanford's wholebody counter. The pulse-height data are stored in a magnetic-core memory of a pulse-height analyzer. Pulse height and digital data are entered into the counter's memory unit through a keyboard similar to that of a fivecolumn adding machine. (auth)

A system is described in which a conventional single parameter multichannel analyzer is used as a two parameter analyzer. A two parameter selector which selects the coincident events to be studied and the memory section to store them, was developed. Each of the coincident pulseheight distributions, from the two detectors, is applied to one set of deflection plates of a 5-in. cathode-ray tube. A delay line memory system to be used with a pulse height analyzer capable of analyzing several pulses during one memory cycle is described. The synchronizing pulse generator generates a synchronizing pulse, which is circulated along the delay line and gives a reference of phase, so that the pulses in each channel of the memory will come out in phase with the addition signals from the binary converter. The most important area of development in gamma-ray scintillation spectrometry at the present time is the adaptation of digital computer techniques to the analysis of pulseheight spectra. A MULTICHANNEL PULSE HEIGHT ANALYZER USING PARAMETRON LOGIC

A time conversion type 256-channel pulse height analyzer, which uses a parametron memory circuit, was constructed. The memory cycle was reduced to l00 mu sec by means of a novel logical circuit. An analog-digital converter of the pulse height analyzer can analyze pulses, which come simultaneously from up to eight different counters, and can sort pulses from a counter into up to eight groups, in accordance with coincidence inputs from other counters. A system is described in which nuclear events characterized by three parameters are recorded in digital form on magnetic tape by the record station. The completed tape is then analyzed off-line by the search station. Events of a typical experiment may consist of two pulse heights and a neutron time-of-flight, two pulse heights and an angle, or three coincident pulse heights. Each parameter is encoded by eight binary characters (bits) or 256 channels; thus, the number of different combinations is (256)³ or approximately 17×10⁶.
