An analysis was made of the discrepancies between the hfs and isotope shift results for Hg/sup 194/, Hg/sup 195/, and Hg/sup 195m/ of Kleiman and Davis and our data, particularly in view of the importance of these results for the interpretation of the odd-even staggering effect in isotope shift. The hfs results were confirmed by the more precise level-crossing experiments of W. W. Smith. Errors in the work of Kleiman and Davis were attributed, in part, to the presence of Hg/sup 197/ and Hg/sup 197m/ in their sources. Experimental results are shown for the Hg/sup 194/ isotope shift. It is found that the Hg/sup 194/Hg/ sup 196/ isotope shift = 0.146 plus or minus 0.010 cm/sup -1/, and a preliminary value Hg/sup 193m/- Hg/sup 195m/ shift = 0.150 cm/sup -1/. These results lend further support to our hypothesis on the causes of odd-even staggering in isotope shift. (auth)
