PRODUCTION OF NEUTRAL PIONS IN THE INTERACTIONS OF 8.4 Gev/c $pi$$sup -$ MESONS WITH Xe NUCLEI
The production of photons in pi /sup -/ - Xe nucleus collisions was investigated at a primary momentum of 8.4 Bev/c. The photons were determined to be produced almost entirely in pi /sup 0/ decay processes, and the angular distribution and energy spectrum of the parent neutral pions are shown. A comparison was made between the high energy part of laboratory spectra of secondary pi -mesons produced in pi -/sup -N collisions and pi /sup -/-C collisions and the pi /sup 0/ mesons of the present experiment. The pi /sup 0/- spectrum agrees very well with the pi /sup -/, but not with the pi /sup +/ spectra, from other experiments. Possible production processes that would account for the observed behavior are discussed. (H.D.R.)
