STABILIZATION OF A HOT-CATHODE P.I.G. DISCHARGE IN A MAGNETIC FIELD

The stabilization of low-pressure, large-diameter discharges in magnetic fields was achieved by incorporation of a gridded structure over the cross section of the column that effectively reduced the plasma diffusion length in the radial direction and resulted in an increase in the critical magnetic field. The discharge configuration studied was a partially ionized gas discharge at 10/sup - 3/ to 10/sup -1/ Torr. The gases investigated were argon, krypton, and xenon. (C.E.S.)
