LEPTONIC HYPERON DECAYS AND UNITARY SYMMETRY

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Letters
Use of the unitary symmetry scheme (eightfold way) of Gell-Mann and Neeman is shown to resolve the discrepancy between experimental values of the branching ratios of LAMBDA and SIGMA /sup -/ decays and values derived from V-A theory. The experimental values had been too low. Branching ratios are calculated and are shown to fit experimental data. Coupling constants for pions to baryons are calculated, and predictions on the leptonic decays of XI particles are made. (D.C.W.)
