The extraction of uranyl nitrate from aqueous solutions by mixtures of tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) and carbon tetrachloride is governed by the equilibrium compositions on either side of the miscibility gap in the quaternary system UO/sub 2/(NO/sub 3/)/sub 2/-- H/sub 2/O- TBP- CCl/sub 4/. Thermodynamic desc riptions of nonideal behavior in binary and ternary mixtures are first discussed. The materials used, their most important physical constants, and the purification procedures appiied in the measurement of the equilibrium concentrations are surveyed. The values determined at 25 c- C for the equilibrium concentrations and the vapor pressures in the CCl/sub 4/- H/sub 2/ O- TBP and UO/sub 2/(NO/sub 3/)/sub 2/- H/sub 2/O- TBP syste ms are reported. The results for the quaternary System are shown in tables and in diagrams. The effect of nitric acid on the extraction of UO/sub 2/(NO/sub 3/)/sub 2/ with pure and diluted TBP is determined. The effect of other variables important in an effective extraction scheme is also considered. (J.S.R.)
