THE EFFECT OF A DILUENT ON THE EXTRACTION OF URANYL NITRATE WITH TRIBUTYLPHOSPHATE

The dependence of UO/sub 2/(NO/sub 3/)/sub 2/ extraction by solutions of tributyl phosphate in kerosene, C/sub 6/H/sub 6/,CCl/sub 4/, cyclohexane, C/sub 5/H/sub 11/OH and isoamylacetates on the TBP concentration in the organic phase was investigated. The aqueous phase contained 0.0262 of UO/sub 2/(NO/sub 3/)/sub 2/, 4.01 of NH/sub 4/NO/sub 3/, and mol/kg of HNO/sub 3/. The UO/sub 2/(NO/sub 3/ )/sub 2/ concentration in the organic phase gradually increased as the tributyl phosphate concentration increased and reached its maximum value (for all diluents, except C/sub 5/H/sub 11/OH) when the tributyl phosphate concentration was equal to or less than 50%. The degree of UO/sub 2/(NO/sub 3/)/sub 2/ extraction from aqueous solutions of similar concentration, acidified with HNO/ sub 3/ (0.05 mol/kg), increased almost linearly with tributyl phospbate concentration (up to 60 to 80%). The nature of the diluents had little effect on the extraction, with the exception of C/sub 5/H/sub 11/OH. which decreased the extraction capability considerably.
