THE SYSTEM URANYL NITRATE-WATER-TRI-N-BUTYL PHOSPHATE-CARBON TETRACHLORIDE

A thermodynamic description is given of non-ideal behavior in binary and ternary mixtures. The relation between the equilibrium constant for the homogeneous dissociation of a binary liquid compound and the shape of the freezing-point diagram of the two components is discussed. A survey is given of the materials used, their most important physical constants, and the purification procedures applied. The values that were determined at 25 deg C for the equilibrium concentrations and the vapor pressures in the systems CCl/sub 4/ --H/ sub 2/O --TBP and UO/sub 2/(NO/sub 3/)/sub 2/-H/sub 2/O TBP are stated. The experimental data concerning the quaternary system UO/sub 2/(NO/sub 3/)/sub 2/--H/ sub 2/O --TBP --CCl/sub 4/ are tabulated. The influence of nitric acid on the extraction of UN with pure and with diluted TBP is also discussed along with the influence of other variables that are important in an effective extraction scheme. (RCN) The methods of potential analysis and ultraviolet analysis for continuous measurement of hexavalent chromium for control in the Darex process were investigated. Problems of continuously making exact dilutions, deaeration of the flowing sample, build-up of coatings on cell windows, optical standardization, and electronic circuit complexity combined to make the ultraviolet method somewhat impractical for continuous use. Better results were obtained with the potential analysis method. (P.C.H.)
