PROPORTIONAL COUNTERS FOR X-RAYS AND EXPERIMENTS INVOLVING THEIR APPLICATION IN X-RAY SPECTRAL ANALYSIS (in Russian)
Two types of proportional counters for the detection of x rays are described. One type has a side entrance window while the other has an aperture in the front portion of the counter. All windows are made of beryllium foils whose thicknesses are in the range 150 to 200 . The counter with the side entrance is constructed completely of metal; a 34 mm diameter cylinder, 150 mm in length, serves as the cathode while a 0.1 mm molybdenum wire functions as the anode. To decrease the dead volume of the front-window counter and the influence of edge effects on the counter resolution the anode filament is bound directly to the front of the glass bulb. In this way the dead volume is made up only by the thickness of the giass itself, about 1.5 mm. Performances of the two types of counters were examined using x rays from various elements. Several electric characteristics are investigated and plotted: the dependence of the pulse amplitude on the operating voltage, and, the dependence of the pulse length and the pulse growth time on the load resistance. Also, the dependence of the counter resolution on the operating voltage and on the load resistance is discussed. (TTT)
