PROPORTIONAL COUNTERS FOR X-RAYS (in Russian)
The construction and the parameters of two types of proportional counters, designed for the investigation of x-ray structures and x-ray spectra, are described. The counters are of the side entrance variety. The cathode cylinder is made of copper, while a tungsten wire, 0.1 mm in diameter serves as the anode. The entrance (0.2 mm) and exit (1 mm) windows consist of beryllium disks. Two types of counters are described: one in which the ratio of the wire length to the counter diameter is 3 to 1, and, the other in which this ratio is 2 to 1. A mixture of xenon and methane is employed as the counting gas. Various electronic characteristics of the counters were investigated and discussed. The counters were found to be effective for x rays in the range from the chromium K/ sub alpha / line to the molybdenum K/sub olytic C and / line. The resolution of the counters was found to be such that they can be used to analyze spectra for elements differing from one another in atomic number by four. (TTT)
