INVESTIGATION OF THE FORMATION OF AN ACCELERATED PARTICLE BEAM IN THE SYNCHROPHASOTRON BY MEANS OF INDUCTION ELECTRODES (in Russian)
Electrostatic signaling electrodes, consisting of wide Cu plates placed at both sides of the beam, are employed at the Dubna synchro-phasotron for recording the acceleratedparticle beam. The plane of symmetry of the vertical electrode system coincides with the central plane of the magnet of the accelerator while the radial system lies orthogonally with respect to the first one. The signal induced in the vertical electrodes is proportional to the azimuthal variation of the particle charge density in the emitted cluster; the sensitivity of the instruments used in the vertical system is 1 x 10/sup 12/ protons/v. The radial electrodes record the deviation of the beam in the horizontal plane; they have a sensitivity of 2 v/cm. The azimuthal structure of the beam may be observed about 100 to 150 mu sec after applying the accelerating voltage. By choosing carefully the moment of application of this voltage on the basis of data from the signal electrodes, the energy spectrum of the beam leaving the linear accelerator may be determined. The oscillation processes controlled by the behavior of the particle beam during the first stage of the acceleration may be analyzed, using the results for optimizing the particle acceleration conditions.
