EXPERIMENTAL OBSERVATIONS OF UPSTREAM BOILING BURNOUT

Boiling burnout conditions are generally postulated and observed to occur at the outlet end of unlformly heated test sections. However, during experiments with a 12-ft-long x 0.44-in.-ID test section, boiling burnout conditions were sometimes observed to begin at various locations upstream from the test section outlet. Upstream burnout was observed at mass velocities of 5 x 10/sup 6/ lb/hr-ft/sup 2/ and higher but not at lower masg velocities. In some experiments the hent flux was purposely increased beyond the initial detection of boiling burnout (film boiling), allowing the condition to spread along the test section. Similar results were obtained for both vertical and horizontal positioning with a system pressure of l500 psig. The experiments show the necessity of installing burnout detectors along the entire length of the test section. The experiments also show the need for a hydrodynamic model of boiling burnout which would allow prediction of upstream burnout conditions. (auth)
