BOILING BURNOUT EXPERIMENTS WITH 19-ROD BUNDLES IN AXIAL FLOW

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4668626
Boiling burnout data were obtained for axial flow of water through electrically heated 19-rod bundle test sections in a cylindrical tube at 1,200 psig. The experimerts were conducted with five different test sections which utilized heated lengths of 18.5, 19.5, or 78 inches and spacings between rods of 0.015, 0.050, or 0.074 inches as maintained by spiral wire wraps on 12 of the 19 rods. Data were obtained at mass velocities of 500,000 to 5,000,000 lb/hr-ft/sup 2/ and at outlet coolant conditions up to 38 wt% steam. At low mass velocities, the data show an appreciable effect of rod spacing on burnout heat flux for the 19-rod bundles. The data are compared with independent data and with existing correlations for burnout heat flux of annular or rectangular heat transfer geometries. (auth)
