OZONE HAZARDS ASSOCIATED WITH THE OPERATION OF AN ELECTRON VAN DE GRAAFF ACCELERATOR
Technical Report
·
OSTI ID:4706000
Liquid nitrogen used to cool graphite during graphite damage experiments in which electrons of 2 Mev in beam strengths of 100 mu a bombarded the graphite was found to form a substance that caused severe upper respiratory irritation. The substance was identified as ozone, and a study of health and explosion hazards due to its presence was performed. Steps were taken to eliminate beam passage through the nitrogen, and beam dissipation in air was found to produce insignificant amounts of ozone. (D.C.W.)
