SURVEY OF IODINE-129 CONCENTRATIONS IN THYROID TISSUES (Progress Report, May 17, 1963)
Results are reported from studies of I/sup 129/ concentrations in human and other mammalian thyroid tissues. Analytical techniques are described. Data are presented from the analysis of 34 individual whole human thyroid glands and 4 samples of desiccated hog thyroid. The contribution of I/sup 129/ to total thyroid radiation dose is discussed. The data show that current biospheric I/sup 129/ levels are higher by a factor of at least 10/sup 4/ to 10/sup 6/ than those anticipated as a result of spontaneous fission and cosmic-ray production processes.
