Iodine-129 in mammalian thyroids in the Federal Republic of Germany

The purpose of this study was to determine the /sup 129/I and /sup 127/I concentrations and /sup 129///sup 127/I isotopic ratios in mammalian thyroids in Germany and to establish with these values the baseline /sup 129/I concentration and /sup 129/I//sup 127/I ratios. Bovine and hog thyroids were collected for analysis from animals from various areas in Germany. They were provided by slaughterhouses of the respective cities and were taken from animals bred in nearby farms. Thyroids from wild deer, hares and rabbits were collected from animals which were either killed by hunters or by automobiles in the environs of nuclear power plants.
