THE RATE OF RETURN OF RADIOIODINE UPTAKE BY THE NORMAL THYROID AFTER SUPPRESSION BY PHARMACOLOGICAL DOSES OF STABLE IODIDE

Journal Article · · Health Physics (England)
It is well known that large doses of stable iodine in any form from Lugol's iodine to Telepaque'' will inhibit thyroid uptake of radioiodine for a variable period, which may be several months in the case of a cholecystogram. It has also been shown that further uptake by the thyroid of radioiodine can be suppressed by pharmacological doses of stable iodide given up to 4 hr after single orai doses of radioiodine. A study was undertaken to determine the duration of the inhibition following a pharmacoiogical dose. Observations after a single oral 200-mg dose of stable iodide show that uptake returns to >50% of the normal value by 3 days, to >80% by 4 days, and to about the normal level by 8 days after the dose.
