HISTOCHEMICAL STUDY OF EXPERIMENTAL PNEUMONIA IN ACUTE RADIATION SICKNESS

Journal Article · · Federation Proc.
OSTI ID:4705323
A considerable difference is seen in the character of the metabolic disturbances in pneumonic foci and in the surrounding lung tissue in irradiated and unirradiated animals. Infection, superimposed on acute radiation sickness, aggravates the disturbances of tissue metabolism caused by ionizing radiation. In turn, these disturbances to some extent determine both the distinctive features of the pneumonia arising in the irradiated animal and the character of the regenerative processes developing after the inflammation. The degree and time of appearance of the disturbances that occur in tissue metabolism during the development of experimental pneumonia in irradiated animals depend on the period of the radiation sickness in which the inflammatory process is induced.
