ACTION OF X IRRADIATION ON THE NICTITATING MEMBRANE OF THE CAT (in French)

Journal Article · · Arch. Intern. Physiol. Biochim.
OSTI ID:4705314
Irradiation of the center of the eye of cats caused an increase in the contraction of the membrane produced by intravenous injectlon of adrenaline. The response appeared 10 to 30 min after exposure of the eye to 10000 r and became accentuated with tlme. A 4-fold higher radiatlon dose caused a potentiation of 300% in the effect of adrenaline. The effects of electrical stlmulatlon of the nerve were not augmented; in fact, the contraction amplitude was lower after 40000 r irradiation. Surgical or pharmacologic denervation of the nictitating membrane almost completely suppressed the radioinduced potentiation to catechol amines. Radiation appears to act in a manner similar to that of some drugs, such as reserpine and guanethidine, which reduce the reserves of noradrenaline at postganglionic endings, thus diminishing the response to nervous stimuli while augmenting the contractions induced by injected adrenaline. X rays, in a sense, have a denervating effect on the membrane. Membranes in which the reserves of noradrenaline have been depleted by section of the postganglionic fibers or by guanethidine fail to react in this way. However, the parallelism is not complete, since with x rays the phenomenon seems to be irreversible. (TCO)
