QUASI-ELASTIC SCATTERING OF 7-Gev/c PIONS AND THE PROTON MOMENTUM DISTRIBUTION IN CARBON NUCLEI

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4704014
ABS>Quasi-elastic scattering of 7-Bev/c negative pions on protons bound in carbon nuclei was studied in a propane bubble chamber. On the basis of 188 events the total quasi-elastic cross section was estimated to be 6.21 surface proces 0.91 mb. From measurements of the directions of the secondary pions and protons it was possible to determine the nucleon momentum distribution in carbon. In the region up to 500 Mev/c, it was found that a gaussian distribution falling to 1/e at a momentum corresponding to a kinetic energy of 10.26 surface proces 2.80 Mev gives good agreement with the experimental data.
