YIELD OF PROMPT GAMMA RADIATION FROM FISSION OF U$sup 235$ BY THERMAL NEUTRONS (in German)

Journal Article · · Ann. Physik
A double ionization chamber was used to measure the kinetic energy of the fragments appearing in the fission of U/sup 235/. A scintillation counter served to detect the gamma quanta and measure their energy. The counter pulses were processed electronically so that in case of a coincidence in the mass ratio, the fragments as well as the gamma energy proportional impulses could be stored photographically in a two-dimensional multichannel process. The observed coincidence spectra were corrected for the influence of the prompt fission neutrons. The absolute gamma yield amounted to 7.93 surface proces 0.48 quanta/ fission. The dependence of the absolute gamma yield on mass ratio of the fragments was plain at M/sub 1//M/sub 2/ = 1.2 and harder to recognize at M/sub 1/ /M/sub 2/= 1.9. The dependence of the reduced energy spectra on the mass ratio of the fragments at E/sub r/ = 160 kev showed a preference for symmetrical fission. (tr-auth)
