The fission fragments from thermal fission of /sup 235/U were investigated with regard to their kinetic-energy distnibution, mass distribution, mass ratio, and angular distribution. A modified Frisch gridded double ionization chamber was used, which contained a thin foil of plastic upon which / sup 235/U was deposited. The gas in the chamber consisted of approximates 93% A + 7% CO/sub 2/ operating at slightiy under atmospheric pressure and at saturation voltage. A 3" x 3" NaI(Tl) crystal was used as the gamma detector. The electron pulses produced by the fission fragments were collected at the anode in approximates .2 mu sec, and a coincidence circuit was set up between this pulse and the prompt fission gamma ray. The positive ion pulses were collected at their respective anodes in the order of a few msec, the time of collection depending upon the angle of emission of the fragments as well as the length of the ionization path produced. Thus, the energy, mass, and angle of emission of the fragments couid be obtained in coincidence with different prompt gamma radiation. An automatic recording circuit recorded the data, which was analyzed by an IBM 7074. Tests were run for gamma radiation >2 Mev and gamma > 3 Mev, and the resuits compared to all gamma 's (i.e., the standard double-humped energy curve). Pronounced structurat effects increasing with gamma energy were noticed in both the fission fragment kinetic energy and the mass ratio distribution. (Dissertation Abstr., 24: No. 8, Feb. 1964)
