MODIFICATION OWING TO POST-TREATMENT OF GENETIC DAMAGE IN KERNELS OF IRRADIATED MAIZE (in Italian)

The storage effect in maize kernels following x irradiation was studied. The frequency of yellow-green sectors on the green background of maize seedlings heterozygous Yg/yg (Yg = yellow green 2 on the short arm of chromosome 9) has been used as a criterion of measuring the induced genetic damage in seeds possessing water content of 4 (dry seeds) or 11% (normal seeds) maintained during the storage at two different levels of temperature. It has been possible to show that the damage is increasing during the first 2-4 hours of storage, while later on, the behavior is slowly reversed. High temperature during the storage has been found having a protective effect. Such storage effect is less obvious in normal than in dry ones. (auth)
