GENETIC DAMAGE IN SEEDS OF MAIZE TREATED WITH X RAYS AND WITH NEUTRONS UNDER DIFFERENT PHYSIOLOGICAL CONDITIONS
Curtis et al., have demonstrated that in barley the physiological'' effects of x ray and neutron treatments on dormant seeds may be sigrificantiy altered by varying the moisture content of the seeds or their storage after treatment. Somewhat similar treatments were repeated on seeds of heterozygous maize for alleles of the yg/sub 2/ locus. Somatic sectors, representing loss or inactivation of the dominant allele, propide a criterion of genetic change in the short arm of chromosome 9. The scoring of the 5th leaf of the seedlings sprouted from the irradiated seeds for yellowgreen streaks in green background were recorded. The water cortert of the treated seeds were about 6 to 13 and 26 to 32% respectively. The pianting times were from few minutes after treatment up to weeks. Under such experimental conditions no great differences were observed, although they are, by and large, in the sense of reported results. (auth)
