INFLUENCE OF TEMPERATURE ON THE FREQUENCY OF SOMATIC MUTATIONS INDUCED BY X RAYS IN MAIZE SEEDLINGS (in Italian)
The frequency of yellow-green sectors on the green background of heterozygous maize seedlings Yg/sub 2//yg/sub 2/ (yg/sub 2/ = yellow-green-2 on short arm of chromosome 9) was used as a criterion of measuring somatic mutation rate induced by x irradiation (3 to 8 kr) on seeds possessing water content of 4 (dry seeds) or 11% (normal seeds) at different temperatures. With dry seeds the mutation rate is the same at -70 and 20 deg C, but drops significantly and linearly passing from 20 to 35, 50, and 65 deg C. Such decrease is great for the third leaf, moderate for leaf four, and slight for leaf five. In seedlings sprouted from seed irradiated with 11% of moisture content, on the contrary, the sensitivity plateau of the dry seeds, between -70 and 20 deg C is missing, since the mutation rate at 20 deg C is already clearly lowered as compared with that of -70.
