A supporting carriage is adapted to roll alternately on circular rails, e.g., disposed around a nuclear reactor and on radial rails disposed perpendicularly to the circular ones. The carriage comprises at least two convergent axles for rolling on the circular rails and at least two parallel axles for rolling on the radial rails. At least one of each of the two groups of axles is a driving axle, while at least the axles of one group are mounted on jacks adapted to raise or to lower them with respect to the axles of the other group. Means are provided for detecting rails perpendicular to the rails on which the carriage is rolling at a given moment and for stopping the carriage in a position where the wheels of the axles at this moment are inactive and in alignment with the detected rails.
