THE UC-UN AND ThC-ThN SYSTEMS

Journal Article · · J. Less-Common Metals
The interdiffusion of UC and UN and of ThC and ThN was studied by forming pellets of carbide-- nitride mixtures, firing them at 1600 deg C, and analyzing them by x-ray diffraction. The results for the ThC/ThN mixed phases confirms Vegard's Law and indicates that C and N diffuse readily at 1600 deg C in ThC and ThN. The UC/UN samples showed a stationary UC pattern and a more diffuse pattenn from a UC/UN phase of varying composition. The possible causes of the decreased diffusion in UC are discussed. (D.L.C.)
