The phase equilibrium relations in systems of UC, UC/sub 2/, and UN with Cr, Fe, and Ni were investigated. Powdered mixtures were cold-pressed to form pellets and heated in thoria crucibles in an atmosphere of purified Ar until equilibrium was reached, at temperatures between 1000 and 2000 deg C. The specimens were then cooled and examined metallographically and by x rays for phase identification. Solidus and liquidus temperatures were determined for selected compositions by metallographic examination of pellets that were fired at various temperatures. The systems UC -Cr, UC --Fe, UC --Fe/sub 2/, and UN-Fe were found to be of the simple eutectic type with no evidence of solid solubility. UC and Ni were found to be incompatible and the solid phase distribution in the ternary system U-NiC was established. In the system UN-Ni loss of Ni occurred with formation of UNi/sub 5/ at the N pressure prevailing during the experiments. In the UC/sub 2/--Fe system a compound UFeC/sub 2/ forms by a peritectic reaction between UC/sub 2/ and the liquid phase and forms a eutectic with Fe. Preliminary investigations suggest that the tie UC/sub 2/-Cr does not exist in the system U-- Cr --C. Some thermodynamic considerations are also presented. (auth)
