A TERNARY COMPOUND IN THE U-Fe-C SYSTEM

Journal Article · · J. Nuclear Materials
Metallographic evidence of a ternary compound was obtained during investigations on the U- C- Fe system. The compound is formed by peritectic reaction, with liquidus and solidus temperatures of 1740 plus or minus 15 and 1615 plus or minus 10 deg C, respectively. Chemical analysis, with minor corrections for the amount of free iron, obtained by a metallographic point counting technique gave a composition of 75.4 wt% U, 17.3 wt% Fe, 7.4 wt% C, corresponding very closely to an atomic ratio for U: Fe; C of 1:1:2. Powder data for UFeC/sub 2/ are tabulated. (P.C.H.)
