NUCLEAR MAGNETIC MOMENTS OF PLUTONIUM-239 AND 241 (in French)
The nuclear magnetic moments calculated from the factor alpha /sub 7s/ = 0.364 cm/sup -1/ are mu (Pu/sup 239/) = 0.207 plus or minus 0.033 and mu (PU/sup 241/) = 0.73 plus or minus 0.12 nuclear magnetons. The same calculation applied to the magnetic interval factors determined by L. A. Korostyleva gives different values. The /sup 8/F/sub 5/2/ and /sup 8/F/sub 7/2/, terms yield too weak a separation. The mean value of the magnetic interaction constant deduced from the Gerstenkorn and Champeau experimental results, is alpha /sub 7s/ = 307 plus or minus 40 mK. Therefore, the probable values of the nuclear magnetic moments are mu (Pu/sup 239/) = 0.175 plus or minus 0.040 and mu (Pu/sup 241/) = 0.62 plus or minus 0.15 nuclear magnetons. The uncertainty of the results is caused principally by measurements of the hyperfine structure. (J.S.R.)
