DETERMINATION OF THE MAGNETIC MOMENT OF PLUTONIUM-239 (in French)

The Goudsmit-Fermi-Segre relationship connecting the magnetic moment mu to the interval factor an of the ns electron permits, in particular, the evaluation of the nuclear magnetic moment of Pu/sup 239/ if the interval factor a/ sub 7s/ of the 7s electron can be determined in this case. The interval factor a/ sub 7s/ was evaluated from the hyperfine structure of the Pu II rays, and the value of the magnetic moment thus deduced was equal to +0.21 plus or minus 0.06 mu /sub N/. The arrangement of the components makes it possible to state that the magnetic moment is positive, whereas the theoretical value given by B. R. Mottelson and S. Nillson is negative and equal to --0.1 mu /sub N/. The value found +0.21 mu /sub N/ differs by a factor of 10 from that given by Hubbs et al. (10.02 mu /sub N/). This last value calculated from the hyperfine structure of the /sup 7/F/sub 1/ level of Pu I (studied by magnetic resonance) rests on the hypothesis that the coupling is LS: but, the fine and hyperfine structures of the /sup 7/F/sub 0-6/ show that this hynothesis must be rejected. The value of the magnetic moment calculated from the interval factor a/sub 7s/ is, in principle, independent of the coupling mode. The value proposed is found in the region of uncertainty given by Bleaney et al. ( plus or minus 0.4 plus or minus 0.2 mu / sub N/) obtained by magnetic resonance. (tr-auth)
