The parts of an experimental nuclear reactor are arranged according to the principle of a box of bricks. The pants comprise graphite moderator reflector blocks and special containers enclosing the nuclear fuel and an additional moderator, e.g., constituted of water. According to another embodiment, the fuel elements are enclosed by a synthetic material containing hydrogen, e.g., polythene, so that there is no container necessary to enclose the fuel and the additional moderator. The said parts containing the nuclear fuel are arranged inside a marginal zone enclosing a central zone occupied by graphite blocks, so that after the removal of a number of these blocks, said zone shows stable cavities adapted to receive elements, the deportment of which has to be examined.
