The reactor comprises a moderator composed of solid material, while elongated fuel elements are disposed within horizontal tubes that are regularly spaced in the moderator. The said tubes form part of the sides of passageways through the reactor so that a cooling gas can flow in a vertical direction through the passageways and across the tubes. The tubes containing the fuel elements are preferably formed separately from the solid moderator and are arranged in openings of this moderator. The moderator comprises graphite or beryllium oxide blocks arranged with their longitudinal axis vertically and shaped on two of their sides so that respectively the said sides of the blocks and the outer surfaces of the tubes bound the passageway for the cooling gas.
