STUDY ON THE DEWATERING TREATMENT OF RADIOACTIVE SLUDGES (in Japanese)

Journal Article · · Proc. Japan Conf. Radioisotopes

The methods that have been applied for dewatering radioactive sludges are the following four or their combinations: settiing, filtration, centrifuging, and freezing. The effect of addition of several kinds of polymers on the dewatering efficiency was investigated for each method except centrifuging. Three kinds of sludges-bentonite-Konan Floc sludge, calcium phosphate sludge, and ferric hydroxide sludge-were tested. The most effective dewatering method for each kind of sludge was found as follows: for BentoniteKonan Floc sludge, vacuum filtration after freezing at --2 deg C, with 100 ppm polyoxyethylene added; for calcium phosphate sludge, vacuum filtration after freezing at -2 deg C, with 300 ppm Separan AP 30 added; and for ferric hydroxide sludge, vacuum filtration after freezing at --13 deg C, without polymer addition. Although the vacuum filtration after freezing and thawing is considered to be the most effective method as described above, handling of the sludge cake formed in a filter is troublesome. For this reason, the settling treatment after freezing and thawing has been adopted at our laboratory because the amount of radioactive sludges is sufficient at the present time. A small radioactive sludge concentrator was constructed at the Radiation Center of Osaka Prefecture in March of 1962. This plant is the first attempt in Japan to adopt the freezing treatment for concentrating the radioactive sludge. The effective capacity of treatment is 100 liters per day. The time required for one cycle operation is usually about 12 hours, 6 hours of freezing and 6 hours of thawing. The over-all volume reduction ratio is at least 20. (A.G.W.)
